Mr Richard David (“David”) Ratcliff,. His hometown is Hexham, Northumberland, England, where his “local” — Hexham Abbey — opened in the year 674CE.
His daughter, Mrs Elizabeth (“Liz”) Binks, is a 46-year-old social worker, who also resides at Hexham. She is Canon Garland’s great grandniece.
David John Garland was born at Dublin on 4 October 1864 (his 155th birthday would have been last Friday) and he died five days after his 75th birthday, reportedly while penning his next sermon in the Rectory of his Parish of Ithaca-cum-Bardon, on 9 October 1939 — 80 years ago.
Canon Garland was laid to rest in Toowong Cemetery in 10 October 1939 in the same grave as his beloved wife, Mary Garland, who had passed away in 1933.
In 2013, the personnel of the group who would soon after form the Canon Garland Memorial Society Incorporated, conducted a Russian Orthodox/Anglican commemoration service at the tomb of Canon Garland to mark the remarkable refurbishment of same after decades of neglect (photos available).
As you know, this tiny group of volunteers went on to see to the design, creation, locating and erection, official unveiling, blessing by his Grace, and formal handover to the City of Brisbane (in the person of Lord Mayor Graham Quirk — but represented on the day by Councillor Peter Matic) by 22 April 2016.
Around Anzac Day 2018 I reached out to David via e-mail to ask whether he could assist me with some family history question I had about Canon Garland.
Through that initial exchange, David mused that perhaps Brisbane had not seen the Golden Cross of the Knighthood of the Order of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for awhile — and would I like some photos (he sent me the first coloured images of this extraordinary holy relic that I, or anyone else in Australia, had ever seen).
From then on, the idea that — some day — the “Pectoral Cross” might yet make a visit to Brisbane for the first time since the end of World War, seems to have captured David’s imagination.
As you know, in October 2018 that daydream became a reality.
A year on, it’s happened again.
A tallowwood sapling — thanks to the wonderful encouragement and organisational nous of Walter Taylor Ward Councillor, James Mackay, of Brisbane City Council — has been planted and now blessed with Holy Water and the Pectoral Cross, courtesy of prayers offered up by the Reverend Bill Colbrahams (incumbent of St Barnabas’ Church, Parish of Ithaca-Red Hill) on Tuesday afternoon this week.
His Grace, the Archbishop, is presently in Canterbury and will be telling all and sundry about the Pectoral Cross — and mentioning that he invested David with the Canon Garland Memorial Medal during an impromptu ceremony in his St Martin’s House office on Tuesday morning, 8 October The official unveiling of a plaque — provided by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads — declaring the renaming of the former Toowong Bicycle and Pedestrian Overpass to “Canon Garland Overpass” was jointly conducted by David and Liz in a ceremony lead by the State Member for Mount Ommaney, Ms Jessica Pugh MP (standing in for the Tranport Minister) at 10 o’clock on the 80th anniversary of Canon Garland’s passing.
The ceremony was held near the eastern foot of the Canon Garland Overpass, where it commences in Toowong’s Anzac Park and provides safe passage across the Western Freeway. It ultimately links up with BCC-built pathways leading down into Canon Garland Place in Toowong Cemetery and across to the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and the western portal of Legacy Way tunnel.
Three State Members of Queensland’s Parliament — the Hon. Steve Minnikin MP (LNP, Chatsworth), Ms Jessica Pugh MP (ALP, Mount Ommaney) and Dr Michael Berkman MP (Greens, Maiwar) — were present, as well as Councillor James Mackay, the Reverend Canon Gary Harch (Rector of Kangaroo Point Parish) and Fr Colbrahams.
A prayer was offered in memory of the life and works of Canon Garland by the Archdeacon to the Australian Army, Padre, the Venerable Robert Sutherland CSC who is based in Canberra.
